Sleepy LaBeef is a talented multi-instrumentalist and one of the few first generation, deep baritone-voiced rock and rollers. He recorded his first single for Starday in 1956 and followed that with two 45s released on Mercury-Starday and seven different Starday-Dixie soundalike EPs. Sleepy then became a star on the Houston Jamboree and the Louisiana Hayride in the 1950s, played a prominent role in the 1970s European rockabilly revival, and was among the first inductees into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. Sleepy is often acknowledged as having an incredible memory for lyrics (his repertoire includes an estimated 6,000 songs) and I sure am glad he never forgot the first few gems he recorded for Starday.
